Lake Anne last night (alas, no
comets, wise or not)

churning peach purée 
into sorbet. what next, squash?
perhaps eggplant? (yikes)

plants growing near creek
prepare for sleep with chirping, 
croaking lullaby

only one praying 
mantis will survive the night
(like the Highlander)

summer storm over-
-powers garbage bins, quenches
thirsty blades of grass
